Difference between Hard Disk Drive & Solid State Drive

Hard Disk Drive ( HDD ) & Solid State Drive ( SSD )

Hard Disk Drive & Solid State Drive, both are storage devices... We can use for Data Storage or to install Operating System. In Laptops or in Desktops, HDD was default device to install Operating System or to store data. But now SSD is an excellent option for the same function. We can see there is a major difference in Technology of both devices.

Looking at the picture we clearly get the difference between these two devices.
Hard Disk Drive uses Spinning Motor, Platters, Head etc & Solid State Drive consist of flash memory.Hard Disk uses more Power as SSD work on Less Power.  Hard Disk is Cheaper compare to SSD`s.Capacity wise, Hard Disk are available from minimum 500GB to 10TB max, as we can get SSD upto 4TB max. If we talk about speed , SSD`s are 10times faster then HDD`s. Operating system boot time in SSD is 10 - 13 Seconds as in HDD its 30 - 40 Seconds. Hard Disk contains moving parts like Motor & Platters, & thus clicks or spinning can be heard & can feel vibrations. SSD has no moving parts so no sound nor vibrations. HDD gets more heated compare to SSD. SSD read-write speed is much faster than HDD. We have heard that magnet can erase data from HDD, but SSD`s are safe from magnetic effects.

Hard Disk Drive are a result of mechanical parts used to read & write data, as physically finding & retrieving data takes more time than electronically finding & retrieving data. The mechanical parts can skip or even fail if they are handled roughly or dropped. HDD`s are also heavier & use more energy than comparable SSD`s.

Because the read-write process requires data movement, SSD`s are usually over provisioned with storage. There is always a certain amount of the drive that is not reported to the operating system and not accessible to the user. This allows room for the drive to move & delete items without affecting the overall storage capacity. SSD delivers faster load time to Games, Applications & Movies. Because of the technology they use, SSD`s are lighter & better able to withstand movement & droppage.

An HDD might be the right choice if :
  • You need lots of storage capacity, unto 10TB.
  • Don't want to spend much money.
  • Don't care too much about how fast a computer boots up or opens programs.

An SSD might be the right choice if :
  • You are willing to pay for faster performance.
  • Don't mind limited storage capacity or can work around that (though consumer SSD now go up to 4TB & enterprise run as high as 60TB.
As I said in previous blog, installing operating system on SSD & kept HDD only for data storage, would be the smart move.
